 Sylacauga is pronounced Sil-a-cog-ah. It’s name is Indian, "Chalak-ge," meaning the "meeting place of the Chalaka Tribe." It was incorporated in 1834 and is located 45 miles southeast of Birmingham and in the southern area of Talladega County. Marble has been quarried, cut, and polished for over 160 years for use as monument and building stone.
